Scope

This document defines a data set of ink value combinations that can be used to characterize sevencolour process printing. This data set is not optimized for any printing process or application area but is robust enough for all general applications. While it is primarily aimed at process colour printing with CMYKOGV inks, it can also be used with any combination of six chromatic inks similar to the defined set and a dark ink.

This document is an addition to the other ISO 12642 data sets where there is a need to characterize an extended set of printing inks.

Purpose

There has been an increasing use of colours beyond CMYK either by adding spot colours to the standard CMYK set or by extending the process colourant set to use 7 colours with the inclusion of Orange, Green and Violet to increase overall gamut and to reduce or eliminate the use of spot colours. A great deal of discussion was had on whether this set should be included in the 12642 series as previously these only had CMYK colourants. The decision to include this as part of the same series was made as it was felt this was a natural progression in the use of characterization data sets.
