New Work Item Proposal - EN 14492-2:2019 (rev) Cranes — Power driven winches and hoists — Part 2: Power driven hoists

Scope

This document is applicable to the design, information for use, maintenance and testing of power driven hoists, compact or open construction, with or without trolleys for which the prime mover is an electric, hydraulic or pneumatic motor. They are designed for the lifting and lowering of loads that are suspended on hooks or other load lifting attachments. Hoists can be used either in cranes, in other machines, e.g. rail dependent storage and retrieval equipment, monorail conveyors or by itself.

This document is applicable to the following types of hoists and applications:

a) rope hoists;

b) chain hoists;

c) belt hoists;

d) NGL building hoists;

e) winches used for lifting operation;

f) hoists designed for holding stationary loads above persons;

g) hoists designed for high risk applications.

This document does not apply to belt hoists with steel belts as hoisting media.

This document does not apply to builders’ hoists for transportation of goods having a guided platform or having a guided load carrying device.

This document is not applicable to the following hazards:

a) this document does not cover hazards related to builders hoists for the transport of goods as defined in Noise Outdoor Directive (OND) 2000/14/EC;

b) this document does not cover hazards related to the lifting of persons.

This document does not specify additional requirements for hazards related to the use of hoists in explosive atmospheres in underground mines.

The significant hazards covered by this document are identified in Annex I

This document is not applicable to power driven hoists that are manufactured before the date of publication of this document by CEN.

Purpose

The current standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with these requirements.

The Revision of the existing EN 14492-2 will be done in order to adapt to state-of-the-art, update the references included and consider the new Machine Regulation (EU) 2023/1230.

The main changes of this new edition prEN 14492-2:202x are:

• The scope will exclude supporting structures for NGL building hoists.

• The scope will clarify that builders’ hoists for the transport of goods as defined in Noise Outdoor Directive (OND) 2000/14/EC are not covered.

• New requirements for cyber-security.

• New requirements for cable-less controls

• New requirements for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)

• The references are updated

• Revision of Annex ZA for Machinery Regulation.
