It shall be similar to IEC 61400-1 and -2 but with the appropriate changes in order to be applicable to AWES systems.
Airborne Wind Energy Systems (AWES) harness wind energy at altitudes up to 800m or even beyond. They generate electricity through the use of kites or aircraft that are tethered to a ground station. In recent years a number of technology developers have developed the first pre-commercial systems. Therefore, it is timely to start activities regarding standardization of products and processes. Currently, the IEC 61400 series do not contemplate AWES.
IEC 61400-80 shall deal with safety philosophy, quality assurance, and engineering integrity and specifies requirements for the safety of AWES including design, installation, maintenance and operation under specified external conditions. It shall provide the appropriate level of protection against damage from hazards from these systems during their planned lifetime.
This Technical Specification is concerned with all subsystems of AWES such as the kite/aircraft, tether, ground station, protection mechanisms, internal electrical systems, mechanical systems, support structures, foundations and the electrical interconnection with the load. While this Technical Specification shall be similar to IEC 61400-1 and – where appropriate – IEC 61400-2, it will make significant changes in order to be applicable to AWES.
The development of this Technical Specification will take considerably more time than the other newly proposed Technical Specification on performance measurement of AWES (Part -12-80). However, both shall reference to each other.
