The document is applicable to the design, manufacture, testing of such appliances.
This document does not cover:
•Hydronic heating appliances with a nominal heat output exceeding 1500 kW;
•Appliances designed for fuels other than solid biofuels; •Manual stoked straw bale boilers; and
•Design and construction of external fuel storage and transportation devices prior to the safety devices of the boiler.
Small solid biofuel combustors (SSBCs), also known as wood pellet hydronic heaters, small-scale biomass boiler or biomass furnace are a type of hydronic heater using graded solid biofuels such as wood pellets, wood chips, and cordwood for small- and medium-scale heat production. Currently, there are no standards or technical committees (TCs) that address this technology at the international level. We believe this proposed new international standard is best situated under ISO TC 11 – Boilers and Pressure Vessels and could be housed in a new sub-committee. According to TC 11’s Strategic Business Plan (SBP), the NP meets the main objective of potentially using the ISO performance standard to accommodate the needs of ISO member bodies’ markets including both users and regulatory bodies. It also meets the other priorities of developing of a common market-based international standard through existing national and regional standards, as well as providing a forum for international cooperation and collaboration for the international standard development.
