It is applicable to both dissolved and suspended particulate organic carbon.
The method is not applicable for the determination of volatile, or purgable, organic carbon under the conditions described in this standard.
The method allows for determination of TOC 2 mg/l. The lower and upper working ranges are restricted by instrument and procedure-dependent conditions (for example sample volume, chemistry concentration, path length) and can be adjusted for a wider range (both lower and upper levels).
The methods given in ISO 8245, ISO 20236 or EN 1484 for the measurement of total organic carbon (TOC) in water samples require costly laboratory equipment and specialists for the analysis. Therefore TOC measurements are mostly not available on mid- and small-sized water treatment facilities. An accurate but simple, efficient and low cost analytical method is desirable to enable TOC measurements also on small and mid size water treatment facilities.
TOC results are available short time. This enables plant operators to react swiftly on unexpected events. This is also in line with a trend in several EU countries to replace harmful reagents using COD test by environmental friendly TOC.
The proposed method comprises pre-packaged chemistries in test vials, digital thermal bench top reactor for the oxidation and spectrophotometer. It completes a batch of 30 samples in 2 h, and can analyze samples containing suspended solids.
