ISO/NP 25898 Aircraft — Autotransformer Unit (ATU) — General Requirements

Scope

This standard specifies the general requirements of the Autotransformer Unit (ATU) for use in aircraft electrical power systems, including materials, design and construction, size and mass, color, processing quality and appearance quality, markings, performance, acoustical noise, reliability, maintainability and interchangeability. Test procedures and Qualification inspection requirements are also specified.

This standard is applicable to the ATU with bidirectional conversion of 230/400 volt alternating current (AC, 360Hz~800Hz) and 115/200 volt power in aircraft electrical power systems. The ATUs consists of autotransformer and associated circuitry for protection, and action of control signals.

Purpose

Autotransformer Unit (ATU) may convert electrical power in aircraft from 230/400 volts Alternating Current (AC,360Hz~800Hz), to 115/200 volts. ATU may also convert electrical power in aircraft from 115/200 volts Alternating Current to 230/400V, while powered by external power unit. Technique of Autotransformer may reduce the weight of transformer when compared with traditional isolated transformer, and also with advantage of high reliability and strong overload capacity. ATU is emerging among aircraft application. For example, it has been used in electrical system of B787 and A350. There are no international standards on ATU, and the standardization is becoming needed for aircraft power supply system. This standard provides the general requirements, testing procedure and qualification inspection requirements of ATU. It will be used as a basis for manufacturers and users that will be developing and utilizing ATU installed in aircrafts. This standard will facilitate the universality of the ATUs in aircraft electrical systems.
