Standards Development
This document specifies terms and definitions, certification principles, certification requirements for biomethane certificates. This document is applicable to certification of biomethane, voluntary or compliance.
This International Standard applies to biomethane certification globally, irrespective of geographical location.
Promote Standardization of Biomethane Trading The establishment of a biomethane certification framework provides unified technical specifications and standards for biomethane transactions, reducing transaction and technical barriers. This helps drive technological transformation and upgrading in biomethane-related enterprises, enhancing their competitiveness.
Promote Global Application of Biomethane According to GIR (Global Info Research), the revenue from global biogas and biomethane was approximately $89.04 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach $98.38 billion by 2028. Therefore, the demand for biomethane is substantial, and the development of international technical guidelines helps provide a foundational standard to promote the global application of biomass energy.
Problems to be Addressed Biomethane is an internationally recognized green energy, and realizing its green value can significantly support the development of the biomethane industry. Currently, the green value of biomethane projects internationally can only be recognized, traded, and monetized through voluntary emission reduction mechanisms (such as Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), Gold Standard (GS), etc.). However, the ecological and environmental value realization pathways for biomethane in China and other developing countries are still lacking, and corresponding certification and trading systems have not been established, making it difficult to realize the green premium of biomethane. Exploring an internationally applicable biomethane green gas certification system to realize the added value of green gas is both necessary and urgent.
Value of the Standard Establishing standards that the criteria of biomethane certificates will better promote the establishment of a global biomethane trading market and open up broader application scenarios. This provides more support for implementing energy transformation and practicing green environmental protection concepts
