Scope

This document specifies a method for the determination of oil content in oil-extended solutionpolymerized styrene-butadiene rubber (S-SBR) using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). This method is applicable to S-SBR extended environment-friendly oils such as naphthenic (NAP), treated distillate aromatic extract (TDAE) and paraffin (PAR).

Purpose

Solution-polymerized styrene-butadiene rubber (S-SBR) has been widely used for high-performance tires and is one of green rubber materials. S-SBR includes non-oil-extended and oil-extended types. Extended oil in S-SBR shows excellent performance when applied, which can improve the processing performance and mechanical properties of rubber, reduce rubber heat generation and hysteresis losses. Therefore, oil content is an important performance parameter for oil-extended S-SBR.

Presently, ISO 1407:2023 is a general standard for the determination of solvent extract of rubber. ASTM D 5774 (Clause 27 to Clause 42) is applicable to determine the oil content of oil-extended ESBR using organic solvents to extract rubber. There is no ISO standard available to directly determine the oil content in S-SBR. In response to environmental issues, more and more S-SBR producers use environment-friendly oils, such as naphthenic (NAP), treated distillate aromatic extract (TDAE) and paraffin (PAR). The volatilized temperatures of these oils are lower than the decomposition temperature of S-SBR polymer. The oil can be completely volatilized before S-SBR polymer decomposition using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technology, and the oil content in S-SBR can be obtained. Compared with traditional extraction methods, this method is high-efficiency and environment-friendly without solvent.

The purpose of this proposal is to develop an ISO standard for the determination of oil content in oilextended S-SBR using TGA.The new proposal was approved at ISO/TC45/SC3 meeting held on 202410-21 in Nara (Japan).
