The standard will define the information required for these activities, the interaction between the relevant parties and the reasonable limitations that are needed to ensure safe operation, i.e. without being overly restrictive.
The subject activities are currently controlled in a relatively ad-hoc manner and very different standards and limitations are often observed, which can result in conflicts between the parties and/or damage to either the jack-up owners rig or the oil companies infrastructure. The purpose of the new standard is to provide sound operational and technical guidance for these activities that will allow the operability of rigs to be assessed using appropriate and consistent methodology thus improving safety and reducing the potential for damage to assets and for conflicts between the parties. Preliminary work on this topic was commenced late in 2014 when ISO/TC 67/SC 7/WG 7 formed technical panel 54. The topic has generated great interest from industry members, to the extent that each of the three Panel meetings held to date have been attended by over 40 experts. The work is being undertaken by experts from Australia, Denmark, Netherlands, Singapore, UK and USA, so we expect support and participation from these member bodies.
