Scope

ISO 8894-2:2007 describes a hot-wire (parallel) method for the determination of the thermal conductivity of refractory products and materials.

Purpose

The thermal conductivity of refractory products is a performance characteristic of high importance for the intended uses.

Three methods to determine this property exist: the hot-wire cross-array method, the hot-wire resistance thermometer method and the hot-wire parallel method. If the first two are covered since several years by the EN ISO 8894-1:2010, adopted in replacement of the EN 993-14:1998, the third one is still covered by the technically outdated EN 993-15.

The identical adoption of ISO 8894-2:2007 (Refractory materials — Determination of thermal conductivity - Part 2: Hot-wire method (parallel)) in replacement of the current EN 993- 15:2005 will hence provide both the producers and users of refractory products with the most up to date testing protocol for the determination of this essential product characteristic.

Such adoption of ISO/TC 33 relevant standards ensures harmonization within the EU and the users benefit from continuity and consistency of technical content at European and national levels
