BS 8571:2018 Method of test for determination of fracture toughness in metallic materials using single edge notched tension (SENT) specimens

Scope

This British Standard gives methods for determining fracture toughness in metallic materials in terms of δ (crack tip opening displacement, CTOD) and J (experimental equivalent of the J-integral) using single edge notched tension (SENT) specimens.
This British Standard also gives a method for determining fracture toughness as a resistance to ductile crack extension (R-curve), or single point determination of fracture toughness at onset of unstable crack extension, or pop-in. The method uses specimens which have been notched and fatigue pre-cracked into parent metal, weld metal or heat affected zone (HAZ). The specimens are loaded in tension, and the force and crack mouth opening displacement are recorded.

NOTE Methods to evaluate the suitability of a weld for notch placement within the target area and, where appropriate, to evaluate the effectiveness of the fatigue crack in sampling these areas are given in BS EN ISO 15653

Purpose

The standard is employed in the pipeline industry for material qualification purposes, to help determine tensile strain capacity and in Engineering Critical Assessments to avoid failure from crack-like defects. It is referenced in BS 7910 and in the DNVGL pipeline standard DNV-GL-ST-F101 and recommended practice DNV-GL-RP-F108.

There are no other European standards that describe SENT testing, so it is important that the standard is revised to maintain relevance and credibility to users.

Purpose:
1. Changes are necessary to Figs 2b & c to clarify the loading of pin-loaded specimens.
2. The range of crack depth to specimen width ratios in clamped and pin-loaded specimens need to be unified.
3. The tolerances for predicated crack extension using the single specimen method need to be consistent with BS EN ISO 12135 and BS EN ISO 15653.
4. Based on recent research an advisory note needs to be included on converting CTOD to J fracture toughness values.
5. Clarification is required on the use of equation (10) for side grooved specimens.
6. Advice is required on the qualification of results from specimens containing slanted fatigue pre-cracks.
