Scope

This part of IEC 60335 deals with safety of electrically operated commercial tumble dryer machines.
It has been prepared based on IEC 60335-1:2020 ED6.0.

This part of IEC 60335 deals with the safety of electrically operated commercial tumble dryer machines, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single phase and 480 V for other appliances.

These appliances are not intended for household and similar purposes. They are used by experts or
instructed persons for commercial tumble drying in areas not open to the public, for example, in hotels,hospitals, restaurants, canteens; or by laypersons in areas open to the public, for example, laundrettes, and communal laundry rooms.

This standard also covers appliances making use of other energy sources and electrical parts of appliances making use of other forms of energy. It does not cover requirements for these other energy sources or compressed air.

Appliances making use of steam or hot water for heating purposes are also within the scope of this standard.

As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by these types of appliances.

However, in general, it does not consider young children playing with the appliances.
Attention is drawn to the fact that:

- for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on -board ships or aircrafts, additional requirements may be necessary;

- in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national
authorities responsible for the protection of labour, the national water supply authorities and similar
authorities;

- in many countries, additional requirements are specified for appliances incorporating pressurized parts;

- for appliances having additional functions (e.g. washing function), other standards are also applicable.

This standard does not apply to:

a) appliances designed exclusively for industrial purposes (ISO 10472 -2);

b) appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas);

c) tumble dryer machines appliances for household and similar use (IEC 60335 -2-11).

Purpose

Commercial tumble dryer machines are widely used, for example, in hotels, hospitals, and laundrettes, but at IEC level these appliances are not covered by any specific product standard (apart IEC 60335 -2-11 that however is intended for appliances for house hold use).

NOTE: For developing a safety standard for commercial washing machines, a project team was established (PT 60335-2-122). According to its related 61/6308/NP, it was anticipated that the same activity would be extended also to commercial electric spin extractors and to commercial electric tumble dryers that are used in the same field and are commonly used in combination with washing machines. If this proposal will be accepted, the same activity will be then assigned to MT 65.
