It is intended to provide practical guidance for designers, specifiers, manufacturers, suppliers, contractors, installers and testers of anchors.
In particular, this British Standard applies to the selection and installation of anchors which are used in safety-critical applications.
This British Standard is restricted to the use of anchors which are inserted into concrete and masonry in drilled holes.
The committee have proposed revising BS 8539, noting that the current version refers to European Technical Report TR053 and Construction Fixings Association (CFA) 'Guidance Note Procedure for site testing construction fixings' which have both subsequently been amended and updated with new guidance on carrying out on site tests in masonry. Site testing in masonry is frequently used to establish allowable loads or check installation quality, this is due to due to the wide variations in type and strength of base materials and availability of published technical data (European Technical Assessments (ETA’s)) in UK specific masonry. The purpose of these changes is to increase the safety when carrying out on site tests in masonry.
