Scope

This document describes electrical requirements and tests for the electrical and electronic systems and components for road vehicles operating at nominal DC supply voltages of 12 V, 24 V and 48 V. This part contains electrical requirements and tests for alternator or generator supplied systems and components.

This document is not intended to apply to systems and components of motorcycles and mopeds. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is not covered by this document.

Purpose

Today‘s standards for low voltage electrical system specifications (i.e. ISO 16750-2 and ISO 21780) are primarily defined to represent an ICE powertrain architecture incl. functions to support cranking, recuperation and torque assist. However, in future automotive applications the main focus of the low voltage electrical systems will be to supply power to all loads via DC/DC converters. This change of functionality offers the opportunity to revise and optimize the electrical system specifications of all voltage levels. This document is part 3 of a new standard series. Part 2 and part 3 of this new standard will replace the existing standards ISO 16750-2 and ISO 21780.
