Scope

This new part of ISO 28564 specifies principles and give a range of guidelines for planning, design and setting of air-terminal guidance systems.

This document is applicable to the planning, design and setting of the public information guidance systems for airport terminals. It is intended for use by airport operators, wayfinding designers, organizations providing airport wayfinding design services and other entities providing wayfinding related services.

This document is not applicable to the planning and setting of safety way guidance systems (SWGS) and safety signing systems in airport terminals, as well as sectors that are subject to specific regulations or principles (e.g. traffic signs on roads within the airport area, variable message signs in air-terminal buildings). However, when creating a wayfinding design brief, many of the principles outlined in this document can be relevant for planning a coordinated scheme.

Purpose

Continued growth in travel and mobility within and between countries has generated a growing range of wayfinding guidance systems and styles containing a wide variety of information. Such systems serve various purposes, such as enabling users to:

— understand the range of facilities and points of interest present;

— understand the physical relationship between these facilities and points of interest;

— determine the best way to reach a required facility or point of interest given their mobility circumstances.

For these reasons, ISO/TC 145 (Graphical symbols)/SC 1(Public information symbolssigns and guidance system)/WG 5 (Public information guidance systems) has drawn up the future standards developing work plan on wayfinding systems (ISO/TC 145/SC 1/WG 5 N17, N62). The plan includes a series of International Standards that provide the guidelines of design and setting of wayfinding systems. “Guidance on good wayfinding practice” is one of the future work items listed in WG5-N17.

There are several typical public places in a city that have a high demand for public information guidance systems, such as airports, railway stations, tourist attractions and so on. The airport, in particular, is one of the most important public places in a city. The experience of guidance system in the airport contributes significantly to the overall impression of the airport itself, and its effectiveness reflects directly on the public image of the host city or country.

The purpose of this new part of ISO 28564 is to provide guidelines on the planning, design and setting of different types of guidance elements in an airport terminal to create an integrated public information guidance system. A standardized and well-executed air-terminal public information guidance system will enable users to navigate with confidence, reduce stress and enhance passenger experience levels for all user groups.
