Find out what cookies we use and how to disable themThis document is based on and replaces IEC PAS 63485:2023 and approaches information for use
that covers the life cycle stages of the use of products in business -to-consumer and especially
business-to-business environments, for example for technicians who assemble, mount, operate,
maintain, repair, or disassemble technical assets.
This document is applicable to creators of information for use of products and gives a set of
requirements for electronic request and delivery processes for any kind of information for use. This
document specifies processes to enable complex relations betw een information sources and
information users when there is no explicit agreement between information provider and information
consumer.
To make sure that all information providers and information consumers can benefit from the practical
and economic advantages of intelligent information request and delivery, this document extends the
IEC PAS 63485:2023. It provides a standard information f low and metadata model and additionally
describes use cases and provides normative sets of core metadata for the respective use cases. In
addition, the document adds a use case for contractually and legally required delivery of
documentation on one side and the use of dynamic intelligent information delivery on the other side.
Besides activity-specific information such as information for use including repair instructions, the
digital manufacturer documentation, sometimes referred to as handover documentation, includes
further documentation regarding identification, technical cha racteristics and contract documents.
The document will update and enrich IEC PAS 63485:2023 with aspects raised by technical
comments submitted within the final vote by March 2023 and normative metadata. In addition, the
document gives guidelines on the combined output structure of both use c ases with the help of an
open-source format of intelligent information Request and Delivery (iiRDS), which is currently under
development.
According to the strategic business plan of IEC TC 3 as of 2023 -11-10, standardization in the field
of documentation covers rules, principles, and methods focusing on machine -readable
representation of information, including ontologies for the definition, co-ordination, and
management of the information required during the whole life cycle of a device, system, or plant.
In the context of smart manufacturing or the industrial internet of things, where any kind of technical
objects are mirrored by their digital twins, all information regarding the efficient, effective, and safe
use of technical objects or products (compare IEC/IEEE 82079-1:2019) needs to be connected to
these virtual objects in a dynamic way. Users do not want to search for technical information in
huge documents. They want information matching their specific use cases instead, according to
their personal requests. Together with real-time descriptive and operational data, they need
information at any time that helps them to interpret these data and to take adequate actions to
guarantee smooth operation of the assets.
This document is relevant for the standardization of automated digital data exchange. It provides
industry-independent specifications for delivery of information and serves to improve cooperation
between industrial companies and the flow of information bet ween original equipment
manufacturers (OEMs) and their customers.
Where the context of traditional documents is less suitable, the metadata ontology of the proposed
standard helps to relate digital twins to the technical information needed in specific use cases. The
proposed standard includes manufacturer information in this digitalization processes as well as
additional normative metadata that connects the relevant needs and practices in various industries
such as the process industry. Therefore, compared to IEC PAS 63485:2023, it has a wider
applicability and relevance as large industry operators start requesting this kind of information
delivery from their suppliers globally and there is already a relevant number of companies that work
according to the requirements of the IEC PAS 63485:2023.
Semantically supported information processes are the prerequisite for real -time delivery of the right
information, at the right time, on the right place, to the immanent need of the users.
The need for manual intervention when revising not standardized documents causes a significant
loss of time and money for industry companies. This document contributes to a seamless exchange
of information between stakeholders, which improves efficiency, h elps to avoid errors, and saves
costs. It further helps avoid huge costs for the operators of any kinds of assets, caused by wrong,
outdated, or not easily accessible and understandable information.
Within the ecosystem of IEC TC 3, this document uses some administrative metadata according to
IEC 82045-2. All other relevant standards in the field of information management have been
evaluated as well to make sure that no unnecessary overlap occurs. Als o, relevant references will
be made where applicable, depending on their development status e.g. digital product passport and
asset administration shell submodels.
IEC/FDIS 81355-1 provides a taxonomy mainly for descriptive documentation and is used to
integrate product-related information into systems. In contrast to IEC/FDIS 81355 -1, this document
provides an ontology for the relationships between the properties of objects and the use of these.
Where appropriate, this document will refer to IEC/FDIS 81355 -1.
