Scope

This British Standard makes recommendations for and gives guidance on health and safety practices in shaft sinking and tunnel construction. The standard includes health and safety recommendations that are also relevant to cut‑and‑cover tunnelling, immersed tube tunnels and other forms of underground construction as well as to the construction aspects of maintenance, renovation and repair of shafts and tunnels. The recommendations in this British Standard are not intended to apply to the construction of shafts or tunnels for the purpose of mineral extraction.

Purpose

BS 6164 has been proposed for revision due to ensuring the standard is in keeping with more recent publications of EN 16191 and EN 12100, the drafting of MSV standards, the introduction of high pressure compressed air working, lessons learned from HS2 including a serious underground vehicle fire, automation and virtual reality, changes in OCC health requirements. Views from the industry would be greatly appreciated to inform the early stages of confirming the proposal to revise BS 6164.
