This test method employs a full-scale test specimen consisting of a short length of pipe (a ‘full ring’), sealed at each end to contain the sour test environment within. The test method applies to any pipe; seamless, longitudinally welded (with or without filler), helical welded, and to girth welds between pipes.
NOTE 1 The specimen is usually a pipe but can also consist of flange neck or section of a bend, or other tubular component or a combination of the above.
NOTE 2 This test method can also be used for corrosion resistant alloys (CRAs).
The method utilizes ovalization by mechanical loading to produce a circumferential stress, equal to the target hoop stress, at two diametrically opposite locations on the inside surface of the test specimen. The test specimen is then subjected to single sided exposure to the sour test environment.
NOTE 3 The test also allows measurement of hydrogen permeation rates.
Back adoption into CEN of the published ISO 3845:2024 Oil and gas industries including lower carbon energy — Full ring ovalization
test method for the evaluation of the cracking resistance of steel line pipe in sour service

CEN/TC 12 approved the initiation of the back-adoption ballot (see N 1763, N1767) per below agreed procedure:
DECISION 08/2024 taken by CEN/TC 12 on 2024-03-08
The CEN/TC 12, Oil and gas industries including lower carbon energy,
― takes note of the presentation of the secretariat on missing work items (N 1731);
― takes note of the documents ISO TS 20790 Guidelines for green manufacturing and lower carbon emission of oil and gas-field
equipment and materials and ISO 13503-8 Oil and gas industries
including lower carbon energy — Completion fluids and materials — Part 8: Measurement of properties of coated proppants used in
hydraulic fracturing that did not receive sufficient support of experts of 5 CEN countries;
― takes note of other ISO documents that are not, with various reasons, adopted into CEN;
― approves the proposed procedure, where the secretariat launches a CIB for approval of the published ISO documents prior to
initiating the back-adoption process. In case of negative votes or substantial comments, the approval of the adoption will be raised at
the plenary.
The decision was taken by unanimity.
