It is applicable to the uranium-lead isotope dating of carbonate minerals, zircon, and apatite.
Laser U-Pb isotope dating of carbonate minerals, zircon, and apatite has rapidly advanced over the past decade, becoming a key technique for reconstructing reservoir diagenesis-porosity evolution in oil and gas exploration, assessing hydrocarbon accumulation stages, and understanding the tectonic and burial history of basins. This method has received widespread attention. The Radiogenic Isotope Facility at the University of Queensland, the LASS at UC Santa Barbara, and the Isotope Geoscience Laboratory at the British Geological Survey Programmes have established experimental setups and laboratories associated with this technology. However, the absence of unified standards has led to inconsistencies in the methods and conditions used across different labs, resulting in limited data comparability. Comparisons of experimental data from domestic and international labs have been conducted, laying a solid foundation for standardization. Therefore, establishing an industry-wide standard for sample preparation and testing in laser U-Pb isotope dating of carbonate minerals, zircon, and apatite is essential. Such standard will ensure the quality and comparability of results both within the industry and internationally, while offering guidance for laboratories that are developing or refining their analytical methods for this technique.
