Scope

This part of IEC 60335 deals with the safety of electric washer-dryers for household and similar use, that are intended for washing and drying clothes and textiles, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single - phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances including direct current (DC) supplied appl iances and battery-operated appliances.

This standard also applies to washer-dryers using heat pump technology for carrying out the drying process. These appliances may use flammable refrigerants. Additional requirements for these appliances are given in normative Annex xx.

Purpose

Appliances with combined functionality for washing and drying laundry (washer -dryers) are commonly available household products in many parts of the world. Lacking a specific product safety standard, this type of products is currently evaluated by applying IEC 60335 2 7 (particular requirements for washing machines) together with IEC 60335 2 11 (particular requirements for tumble dryers). These two standards deal with the specific construction and functionality of their respective product type (washing mach ines and tumble dryers). However, neither is fully addressing the potential hazards related to washer -dryers. Therefore, WG58 was tasked by TC61 to develop the necessary safety requirements for appliances with a washing and drying function.
