Scope

This document specifies safety requirements for LED modules for horticultural lighting purposes for operation at supply of a DC supply of up to 1 500 V or an AC supply up to 1 000 V. This document does not include requirements for performance characteristics of LED modules for horticultural lighting purposes.

This document does not apply to:

- LED packages;

- LED lamps;

- OLED light sources;

NOTE 1: Where the word "LED module" is used in this document, it implies “LED module for horticultural lighting purposes”.

NOTE 2: LED modules that were designated as "independent LED modules" in the past and in IEC 62031:2018 are considered luminaires which comprise LED module(s) as an integral component.

NOTE 3: Requirements for LED modules that are an integral component of the luminaire are specified in IEC 63545:202x. IEC 63545:202x makes reference back to this document as far as reasonable.

NOTE 4: Where the word "LED module" is used in this document, it is understood to be "built-in LED
module”.

Purpose

Horticultural lighting, as one type of specific application, is becoming more and more popular, especially with the application of LED technologies, and the needs for facility farming, such as vertical farming and greenhouse.

Compared with safety requirements for general lighting purpose LED modules, the differences for horticultural lighting purpose LED modules are mainly derived based on following considerations:

• changing of application purpose from vision sensation to horticulture use. Photobiological safety requirements need to be developed based on this nature.

This project acknowledges the need for safety specifications for LED modules for horticultural lighting, which are to be considered as additional requirements or deviated requirements comparing with the LED modules used for general lighting purpose. The requirements in this project intend to represent the technical knowledge of experts from the field of the horticultural lighting, and are intended to be developed in close context with IEC 62031 and IEC 63545.

Development of this project will not only serve the above need, which can also serve as the technical support from lighting industry to the achievement of SDG 2, 3, 8 and 15, since the horticultural lighting based facility farming will help to improve the quality and efficiency of the horticulture production.
