This document specifies the burial operating instruction of standard specimens (carbon steel plates etc.) and testing methods of soil corrosivity. This document only applies to the burial of standard metallic specimens. Non-metallic materials such as polyethylene encasement are not included in this standard. This document does not apply to the assessment of corrosivity in special soil environments, such as soil environments with strong AC and DC interference, local soil environments with significant regional inhomogeneity soil environments and other chemical pollution.
Environmental corrosion in soils is complex involving multiple factors. The scientific classification of soil
corrosivity is beneficial to the selection, design, maintenance and prevention of failure cases in
engineering projects, which is important to the economy, technological advancement and sustainable
development. China has made great efforts in the classification of soil corrosivity with some
achievements, which mainly adopt the methods of simple indicators (such as conductivity method,
multi-index method, etc.). Obviously, there are serious limitations on such methods since only the
individual role of each index is considered, ignoring the interaction between various elements of the
soil, which seriously lags behind the advanced measurements. As a result, these methods have
significant limitations and often lead to miscalculations.
A scientific soil corrosion testing and evaluation system was established through the in-depth study of
the corrosion behavior mechanism of metals and alloys in the soil environment. This classification and
evaluation method mainly combines two soil corrosion classification methods- first-year corrosion rates
of carbon steel, zinc, copper and aluminium and the physical/chemical properties of soil environment,
which facilitates the rapid and reliable analysis and evaluation of corrosion classification in soil
environment. This standard can serve as the guidance for the selection, design, maintenance, failure
prevention and other processes of corrosion resistance engineering projects.
