Scope

This document describes the scientific background and rationale for the content of EN 17950, Protective helmets - Test methods - Shock absorption including measuring rotational kinematics

Purpose

EN 17950, Protective helmets - Test methods - Shock absorption including measuring rotational kinematics, which was published in July 2024 specifies a new, state-of-the art test method to measure translational and rotational kinematics from any helmeted dynamic event such as an impact to an object. During the development of EN 17950, the responsible WG 11 had the ambition to include an informative annex which provides the scientific background and rationale to test method but due to time constraint to finalize the standard, this did not materialize. Now, when EN 17950 has been finalized, time and focus can be put into giving a wider audience information about the rationale for the content of EN 17950, especially regarding the requirements and the decisions taken along the development, for example why it was decided to introduce a new type of head form
