Scope
This part of IEC 62282 covers the definitions of the standardized fuel cell modules for the electric propulsion of heavy-duty applications with regard to dimensions, nomenclature, markings, location of electrical and fluid interfaces and APIs.
This document only deals with the fuel cell module, the boundaries are shown in the block diagram of a fuel cell system (see Figure 2 on the draft below) and the balance of plant is out of the scope.
Purpose
At a worldwide scale, fuel cells and hydrogen are regarded more and more as the most promising solution for zero-emission heavy-duty transport.
However, the cost of custom-built fuel cell systems is still high and one of the main priorities is to reduce the cost of fuel cell systems. Standardization of FCM for heavy-duty applications with respect to dimensions, interfaces and I/O communication is a way to reduce the cost of fuel cell systems with several advantages at different stages see Table 1.
This NWIP focuses on the standardisation of dimensions, electrical and fluid interfaces and Application
Program Interface (API) of fuel cell modules for heavy duty applications.
A standardized fuel cell module has important benefits in terms of economies of scale, market competition and more efficient system development and operation. To reach a large market, the standard shall be useful for multiple applications, such as buses, trucks, trains, ships and gensets. However, designing a standard that address the requirements from several markets is more challenging than a narrower standard targeting a single market.
This document specifies the overall specifications of the standardized fuel cell module (in terms of
dimensions, interfaces and APIs), thus allowing
- Manufacturers and integrators to use this FCM in multiple applications such as buses, trucks, trains, ships, and stationary generators to reach a wide market.
- Manufacturers to produce in large quantities at minimal cost.
This document does not apply to the following applications:
- Racing cars (off-road),
- Aerial aircraft (aeroplane, helicopter, drones) and spacecraft,
- Submarines.
The present NWIP does not cover the specification of connection materials.
