Scope

This specification defines the requirements for the Ultracode 2023 symbology. It specifies the complete
symbol characteristics including the data character encodation process, rules for error correction
codeword encoding and codeword block truncation, the graphical symbol formats and symbol
dimensions, and colour usage in the symbol construction and information encodation. A reference
decode algorithm is given, as well as consideration of user-selectable application parameters.
Specific print and display colour symbol quality methods for Ultracode are discussed as an extension of
ISO/IEC 15415, Information technology – Automatic identification and data capture techniques – Bar
code symbol print quality test specification – Two-dimensional symbols. Methods for assessment of
colour quality are given, along with additional considerations for the measurement of colour bar code
print quality in Ultracode beyond the scope of ISO/IEC 15415.

Purpose

The Ultracode 2023 Symbology is a family of colour multi-row, variable size two-dimensional (2D)
matrix symbols incorporating both structural rules for symbol damage detection and Reed-Solomon
Error Correction (RSEC) for codeword error correction. Ultracode symbols are designed to be printed
using any cyan, magenta, yellow and black process colour printing, inkjet or toner-based printing
technology. It is uniquely designed to compensate for the real-world problem of UV fading of magenta
inks.
It may be displayed on any sRGB-compliant electronic display, such as an LCD or OLED television
screen or a mobile phone display. It may be read with any standard sRGB-compliant scanner, colour
digital camera or smartphone.
Ultracode 2023 is optimized for both symbol display and symbol reading through only a software app
on existing colour smartphones. Through the use of wireless communications such as Bluetooth, a
colour smartphone also may be turned into a wireless colour barcode scanner for Ultracode 2023.
Ultracode 2023, was published in 2023 as an International Technical Standard (AIM ITS) by AIM
Global, an SC31 Liaison Member. It is a 7-year update of Ultracode 2016, the first colour two dimensional symbology published by AIM Global in 2016,
AIM Global believes this Ultracode 2023 symbology is ready for rapid promotion as ISO international
standard. The publication of this proposed ISO/IEC Ultracode standard can connect and benefit the
barcode device manufacturer community and global AIDC application community.
