Scope

This document specifies inspection, measurement and test methods applicable to steel wire ropes and wires taken from the rope.

Purpose

The wire rope test method is an important basis for product quality control and inspections of
manufacturers, users, third-party inspection agencies and arbitration inspections. After years of
technological development and production process improvement in the wire rope industry, the variety
and structure of wire rope have been continuously innovated, the application scope has been
expanded, and some new test methods have been introduced. At present, the ISO standards of the
wire ropes have some mechanical property test methods such as ISO 3108, ISO 12076, ISO 21669,
ISO 16839 and other standards, and the ISO test method standards of wires have ISO 6892.1, ISO
7800, ISO 7801 and ISO 7802. The main deficiencies are: some of the inspection, measurement and
test methods of wire ropes such as twisting quality, characteristic size and performance testing
methods are parts of specific product standards, and there are inconsistent testing methods for the
same test item; meanwhile there are also some inspection, measurement and testing items without test methods, which has brought most of the trouble to the inspection and testing work of wire rope related parties.
This is a proposal of a new work project, the main purpose of which is to develop a relatively complete
ISO standard covering most of the testing items, so as to facilitate the inspection and testing,
international trade and cooperation of all parties involved in the wire rope industry. The main features ofthis project include: first, for testing items without test methods, formulate complete testing methods;
the second is to conduct in-depth research of the testing methods that are parts of specific product
standards with inconsistencies, and then formulate unified testing methods for these items; third, for the existing ISO test method standards, they will be directly quoted to enhances the applicability and
operability of the standards.
This new work project will include test methods for 37 test items, such as tests on ropes like diameter,
out-of-roundness, lay length, length mass, defect inspection, non-looseness, straightness, residual
rotation, breaking force, force at first wire breaking, elongation, elastic elongation, structural elongation, elastic modulus, bending fatigue, rotation, transverse rigidity, salt spray test, lubricant content, strand clearance rate, strand forming rate, strand stretching amount, and tests on wires taken from the rope like tensile, torsion, reverse bending, wrapping, Vickers hardness, coating weight, coating adhesion, coating uniformity, and aluminum content of zinc-aluminum alloy coating.
