It is applicable to soils of unknown quality e.g. from contaminated sites, amended soils or soils after remediation either in situ or laboratory exposure assays. For in situ experiments the areas to compare shall be exposed to the same climatic conditions (humidity, temperature, sunlight). This part specifies a toolbox of methods for analysing variations in physiological parameters and oxidative balance that may be indicative of stress symptoms in higher plants, either monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous species
ISO/TC190/SC4 and CEN/TC 444 have developed standardized methods to evaluate impacts of soil quality on plant seed germination, seedling emergence and growth (EN ISO 18763:2016, ISO 17126:2005, EN ISO 11269-1 and -2:2012); on chronic toxicity endpoints (EN ISO 22030:2005); on genotoxic (EN ISO 29200:2013) and biochemical (EN ISO 21479:2019) effects. Nevertheless, there is no dedicated document or technical specification for the evaluation of soil quality on plants through the measurement of changes in physiological and oxidative biochemical traits that are sensitive and responsive to chemical, physical and biotic stress in soils. Therefore, a series of methods is proposed to determine specific physiological responses and oxidative changes in higher plants, as means to determine the quality of soils potentially affected by different levels of contamination and/or stressors. The procedures outlined in this proposal may help to fulfil market needs and the interests of different stakeholders (from Academia, to Industry and Governmental Entities). The generation of scientific-sound results from the application of the proposed methods may support decision-making processes regarding the impact of used approaches or environmental changes on the exploitation of soils, plants, and their associated services. Overall, this NWIP is the Part 1 (physiological parameters) of the technical specification targeting the measurement of sublethal effects in higher plants exposed to soil pollutants, in which Part 2 describes a set of biochemical parameters Note: in case the WI is based on documents from other organizations than ISO/IEC, please specify it here
