Then a methodology is proposed to harmonize these tests into a single international ISO standard.
ISO-TR-24188 describes the different international approaches to standardization related to « Large Outdoor Fires and the Built Environment » (LOF&BE). The report presents three main fire scenarios: wildland fires, wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires, and urban/informal settlements fires. In ISO-TR24188, a phenomenological analysis has concluded that the LOFs have a combined impact on the built environment of two different types: (1) an intense heat flux generated from the flame front, and (2) a series of firebrand showers. The gap on testing building vulnerability to firebrands has been addressed by the work in ISO TC92 WG14 on the standardization of the firebrand generator. The present Preliminary Work Item would address the second gap, which relates to the impact of heat flux on the built environment. While the effects of firebrands and thermal flux exposure are not independent in real fires, they are different in the way they impact buildings, and therefore they should be addressed as separate standard tests
