Guidance is also given on the factors to be considered during the design process which influence further life. Further information on the environmental case, the business case, and the marketing case are provided in an annex.
This proposed new Part 3 of the ISO 8887 series builds on the existing two parts of the series and complements them with additional information about the various end-of-life options for engineering designers. ISO 8887-3 aims to help increase awareness and understanding for engineering designers about design for disassembling and end-of-life processing. In recent years, policy makers throughout the world have focused their attention on ways to reduce environmental impact. In many countries this has led to, or will soon lead to, new incentives with the result that end-of-life processes now need to be considered at the design stage. Consequently, there is an increasing focus on not only the production of a product but also what is to be done when the user has finished with it. This proposed new International Standard includes options to be taken into consideration for the disassembly of products and the treatment of each of the individual parts through processes such as remanufacturing, recycling, reuse or disposal. The standard aims to help designers incorporate sustainable design thinking into their design and product development work right at the start of the design process
