Scope

This standard has been drafted for compliance with the requirements of the Construction Product Regulations. All characteristics and classes which were not included in the relevant Mandate as essential characteristics have been removed from the standard.

In Great Britain the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD) specify the physical properties, performance requirements or test specifications to be met in order for a road stud to be lawfully used on any public road in Great Britain.

The requirements included in the TSRGD 2016 relate to characteristics and classes, or permitted options for the physical requirements, in BS EN 1463-1:2009 (withdrawn in January 2022) and BS EN 1463-2:2000 (withdrawn in May 2021). To enable lawful roads studs to continue to be installed, the characteristics and classes of road studs as per BS EN 1463-1:2009 and BS EN 1463-2:2000 are defined in Table NA.1. The performance requirements in the TSRGD should be taken as the requirements of this standard and those of BS EN 1463-2:2021, as identified in Table NA.2.

As explained in the European foreword, all content that refers to temporary road stud products in BS EN 1463-1:2009 has not been retained in this edition of the standard. Existing certified products may still be installed on public roads subject to the requirements and specifications in the TSRGD. For completeness, the characteristics and classes of temporary road studs as per BS EN 1463-1:2009 and BS EN 1463-2:2000 are identified in Table NA.3. More detailed requirements and guidance for the use and specification of road studs used in road works and temporary situations can be found in the Code of Practice, Traffic Signs Manual Chapter 8 and the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) standard CD131, expected to be published in 2024.
