ISO/NP 12480-2 (Ed 2) Cranes — Safe use — Part 2: Part 2: Mobile cranes

Scope

This document establishes required practices for the safe use of mobile cranes, as defined in ISO 4306-2. This document is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 12480-1.

Subjects covered include safe systems of work, management, planning, selection, erection and dismantling, operation and maintenance of cranes, the selection of operators, slingers and signalers. It does not cover manually operated (non-powered) cranes, cranes in which at least one of its motions is manually operated and cranes mounted on water-borne vessels, except in those circumstances where a land-based crane is temporarily affixed to a vessel.

Purpose

1. Mobile cranes are used in a wide range of applications across different industries, thus they have great market share around the world.

2. Safe use of mobile cranes is hard to manage due to their high mobility and various working conditions and configurations.

3. In addition to lifting operations, we must consider highway driving, and ‘pick and carry’ operations also shall be specified in the safe use of mobile cranes.

4. Serious accidents of mobile cranes happen every year around the world, incorrect operation is the major cause.

5. The existing ISO 12480 standards lack safe use requirements about how to operate, drive, assemble/disassemble mobile cranes.

6. To keep integrity of the standards (ISO 12480).
