NWIP TS E10+ fuel specification Automotive fuels — E10+ Unleaded petrol — Requirements and test methods (draft title – under discussion)

Scope

This European Technical Specification will lay down the technical requirements for an E10+ fuel specification with an oxygen content of 3,7-8,0% m/m and a maximum of 20  % v/v ethanol content.

A table of requirements and test methods will be added to the specification, with the same properties as in EN 228. Some property limits will be retained, and some limits will change based on the discussion in the TF E10+ and WG21.

Purpose

Commonly available petrol blends include E5 (corresponding to blends with 5%v maximum ethanol content) and E10 (corresponding to blends with 10%v maximum ethanol content). Both are included in the current European petrol standard EN 228. The Renewable Energy Directive and subsequent amendments encourage the use of renewable fuels as blending components in petrol. Recently, the European Commission agreed that all new cars and vans registered in Europe will be zero-emission by 2035, which effectively means a ban on new fossil fuel cars. However, the current fleet will continue to operate for several decades, so renewable fuels will be needed in increasing amounts to replace fossil fuels and help meet the increasing targets for lower carbon and greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector. Hence, standardisation of an E10+ fuel is a logical step. Therefore a Task Force (TF) E10+ has been initiated under CEN TC/19-WG21 with the intent of developing consensus on technical requirements for an E10+ fuel specification that could be formed into a CEN/TS (Technical Specification) and supported with sufficient technical substantiation to be written into a CEN/TR (Technical Report). The group of experts shall consider previous relevant work and draft a fuel quality specification for petrol blended with 3,7% - 8,0% mass of oxygen containing products and a maximum of 20% v/v ethanol content.
