General treatment requirements remains: This European Standard is applicable to the treatment of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
This standard is supplemented, for example by standards covering specific equipment. NOTE This European Standard is intended to cover WEEE arising from electrical and electronic equipment as listed in Annex III of Directive 2012/19/EU.
This standard applies to the treatment of WEEE until end-of-waste status is fulfilled, or until the WEEE and fractions thereof is prepared for re-use, recycled, recovered, or disposed of.
This standard addresses all operators involved in the treatment including related handling, sorting, and storage of WEEE.
The following updates and changes are foreseen to the EN 50625-1:2014 Collection, logistics & Treatment requirements for WEEE Part 1:
General treatment requirements Changes for clarification: Changes to wording to ensure clarity for the user of the standard, that do not modify the intent of the requirement. Updates to outdated references: Outdated references will be removed and updates to relevant legislation will be made, ensuring that the standard remains aligned with current legislation. References to other EN 50625 documents, not ready at the time of preparing the EN 50625-1 will be replacing generic references to them. Alignment with technological developments: Review and update of the standard to ensure fitness for use in relation to existing product design feature and existing treatment technologies. Relationships and boundaries with 50625-series and EN 50614 During the planned light revision of the standard the relationships and boundaries with the other 50625-series documents and EN 50614 will be clarified, as agreed. No changes to the table of contents are foreseen, except where changes for clarifications to ‘terms and definitions’ are deemed necessary
The EN 50625-1 was published in 2014 and has a stability date of 2025. To ensure that the EN 50625 series of standards remain 'fit for use', also after the current stability date of the standard, the EN 50625-1 standard should be kept ‘fit for use’, reflecting the current legislative requirements and technological changes.
