The document will address:
- enclosed spaces in industrial environments
- safety in design
- operational aspects
- emergency response in case of incidents
- limiting the effect of consequences
- general requirements, e.g.
o Ventilation o Containment (material, gaskets…)
o Purging o Ignition source control or hazardous area classification
o Isolation
o Controlled depressurisation
o Automatisation (detection aspects, functional safety)
Large number of hydrogen applications are being developed in enclosed spaces in industry and the built environment. Hydrogen is a flammable gas and is rated in Directive 67/548/EEC or 1999/45/EC R12, in NFPA class IA, and. GHS-US classification H220, all depicting this as extremely flammable.
Safety for hydrogen has been addressed in many reports, studies, codes, recommendations and standards. However, the recent attention for hydrogen will initiate the use in a whole new range of locations that are less or not recognized in the safety guidelines that have been predominantly written for industrial, professional audiences.
These applications and locations need a standard that addresses a more comprehensive, hands on approach to safeguard the daily use of hydrogen as an energy carrier during and after the energy transition. This standard should be an easy and non-complicated reference for users, auditors, first responders and safety authorities, that comprises the extensive knowledge available in literature, codes etc in manageable piece
