Standards Development
This part of IEC 60050 gives the general terminology used in the domain of documentation, graphical symbols and technical representation of information. It has the status of a horizontal publication in accordance with IEC Guide 108, Guidelines for ensuring the coherence of IEC publications – Horizontal functions, horizontal publications and their application.
This terminology is consistent with the terminology developed in the other specialized parts of the IEV.
This horizontal publication is primarily intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of IEC publications in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 108.
One of the responsibilities of a technical committee is, wherever applicable, to make use of horizontal publications in the preparation of its publications
IEC TC 3, SC 3C and SC 3D have been assigned different horizontal functions, assigned by SMB:
- TC 3: “To develop horizontal publication in the area of documentation, graphical symbols and representation of technical information.”
- SC 3C: “Basic design rules for graphical symbols and the design of graphical symbols for particular applications”.
- SC 3D: “Methodology, design, architecture and interface for supporting product data dictionaries.”
Publications of TC 3 are horizontal publications; thus, they should be applied by every TC within IEC when providing requirements and recommendations regarding documentation, graphical symbols and technical representation of information. Terms are defined within TC 3 publications, and efforts are made to provide a coherent set of terms and definitions throughout all TC 3 publications. However, it is recognized that terms and definitions provided are not used by other TCs, leading to inconsistencies and discrepancies between TC 3 publications and publications of the other TCs.
The development of an IEV part related to the domain of TC 3 will help the situation, both on the work within TC 3 itself, but also for supporting TC 3 in providing the necessary tools for other TCs in the preparation of their publications.
