PNW TS 82-2237 ED1: Photovoltaic pumping systems - Part 1: Performance, safety, and durability assessment for small-scale off-grid solar water pumps

Scope

This part of IEC 62253, which is a Technical Specification, specifies test methods for small-scale (<2kW PV power), off-grid solar water pumps that assess performance, safety, durability, and quality.

This Technical Specification applies to stand-alone solar water pumps having the following characteristics:

+ The peak power rating of the PV module or PV array included and/or advertised with the pump is less than or equal to 2kW.

+ All components required to provide basic energy services are sold/installed as a kit or integrated into a single component, including at minimum - Cables, switches, wiring, connectors, and protective devices sufficient to connect the PV module/ array and power control unit(s).

- A controller or inverter, whether separate or integrated to the pump, if needed for the pumping system.

+ The pumping system may include a PV array or advertise specifications for PV modules/ array that can be purchased separately.

+The pumping system is directly powered by a PV module/ array, i.e. battery storage is not required.

+ No design expertise is required to choose appropriate system components (e.g. PV solar array) if sold separately. Installation and operation instructions should be presented in language and graphics that can be understood by the typical consumer (unless, installation is meant to be done by a specified technician) and shall include information (e.g. PV array specifications) to enable selection of components needed if sold separately

Purpose

This set of test methods is intended to support quality assurance for off-grid, small scale solar water pumps by covering aspects of safety, durability, and performance. These test methods are necessary to support the market for these products.

Small scale solar water pumps are being widely used for agriculture and other applications in areas of the world where there is no access to grid electricity. Currently, a portion of requirements listed in IEC 62253 are not relevant or applicable to small scale solar water pumps specifically, and some important tests for these pumps are missing.

Lately, international governments and development programs have been expressing interest in a framework for evaluating the quality, safety, and durability of small scale solar water pumps. Publication of the proposed Technical Specification will help to standardize the way these systems are evaluated.

This Technical Specification will be part of the 62253 series focused on photovoltaic pumping systems and will rely on some of the test methods described in IEC/TS 62257-9-5.
