ISO/NP 25149-2 Ultrasonic method for residual stress characterization — Part 2: Bulk wave

Scope

This document specifies the terms and definitions of residual stress measurement using bulk acoustic wave (BAW), as well as the requirements for measurement personnel, key points, measurement system, calibration of P-wave and S-wave acoustoelastic coefficients, measurement procedure, calibration of measurement instruments, and test report preparation.

This document is applicable to the measurement of residual stress in materials by using ultrasonic bulk wave.

Purpose

Residual stress is a kind of inherent stress popularly exist in materials, which plays a very essential role for quality properties of mechanical components in service. Usually the influence of tensile residual stress is harmful but the compressive residual stress is beneficial. Therefore, it is very important to identify the state of residual stress in mechanical components by an effective and non-destructive testing method. Ultrasonic testing is the effective way to measure the internal stress in materials nondestructively and quantitatively. In order to determine residual stress inside of materials, ultrasonic bulk wave technique was developed and already got a wide application in the industrial area up to now.
