Scope

This part of IEC 60794 is a generic specification covering buffered optical fibre to be used as optical cable element.

Purpose

Buffered optical fibre is commonly used as an optical cable element, particularly in indoor optical cables. The IEC 60794-1-3 series are generic specifications for optical cable elements. They do not currently cover buffered optical fibre. Certain parameters need to be measured in buffered optical fibre because the corresponding tests on the finished optical fibre or cable are not sufficient for a complete characterisation. A generic specification for buffered optical fibres is therefore needed.
