In the regulations ‘Regulator Specifications’ that provide detailed performance, verification and in some cases installation requirements, can also be approved. After public safety incidents of contamination of the water supply were reported that can be attributed to the installation of toilets pans and cisterns (WC’s) DEFRA concluded that an update of the current Regulators Specifications for WC’s and the backflow (air gap) arrangement was required.
The existing regulators specification for the air gap arrangement (AUK1) is referenced as the Regulator’s Specification Test Code Sheet 2213.14 and the new Regulators Specification specifically for WC/toilets, is expected to be titled AUK4.
A new BS on backflow for WC’s is being proposed that would incorporate the interposed cistern method for protecting the incoming water supply. It would specify the characteristics and the requirements of Type AUK4 air gap devices with interposed flushing cistern and appropriate receiving vessel (WC) for the prevention of contamination of water supply by backflow.
This standard would apply to air gaps in factory assembled products and to constructed airgaps in situ and defines requirements and test methods to verify and ensure compliance during normal working use.
