PNW 34A-2386 ED1: LED lamps - Safety requirements

Scope

This document specifies safety requirements for LED lamps for operation at supply of a DC supply of up to 1 500 V or an AC supply up to 1 000 V. This document does not include requirements for performance characteristics of LED light sources.

NOTE LED light sources as defined in IEC 60050-845:2020, 845-27-053 can take the form of an LED module or an LED lamp. LED lamp is defined in IEC 60050 -845:2020, 845-27-054.

This document does not apply to:

– LED packages;

– LED light sources for automotive lighting;

– OLED light sources;

This document is only applicable to the product categories listed in Table 1.

Purpose

In general, LED technology-based light sources are now being used widely and globally.

Also, the technology for LED lamps is now so advanced that applications based on LED technology, e.g., for illumination are increasingly replacing other technologies, e.g., fluorescent technology, often supported by regulations.

The number of different types of LED lamps is large and still increasing. However, the safety aspects for LED lamps, such as, for example, electrical, thermal, mechanical, and photobiological safety, are to a large extend similar for the different types of LED lamps.

To avoid individual safety standards that are largely the same between different LED lamp types, it is considered necessary to have a single coherent safety standard to avoid unnecessary duplications and misinterpretations.
