Standards Development
The Communique outlines the outcomes of the Global Age Assurance Standards Summit to be held in Manchester, United Kingdom, from April 8 to April 12, 2024. It specifically acknowledges the contributions of the International Standards Organisation, particularly ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27/WG 5, in the development of international standards for age assurance. The mentioned standards include ISO/IEC 27566-1 (Age Assurance Systems - Framework), ISO/IEC 27566-2 (Age Assurance Systems – Benchmarks for Benchmarking Analysis), and ISO/IEC 27566-3 (Age Assurance Systems – Technical Architecture, Interoperability and Guidelines for Use).
The Global Age Assurance Standards, as outlined in the Communique, serve as a comprehensive set of principles and guidelines. These standards are designed for the development and implementation of age assurance mechanisms and standards applicable to goods, content, and services accessible to children. The standards draw upon existing and emerging best practices, international human rights instruments—especially the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Optional Protocols—and aim to establish a common reference and shared vision.
The Communique and the Global Age Assurance Standards strive to foster a collective effort among various stakeholders involved in designing and delivering online services to create an online environment that is safe, respectful, and protective of children's rights.
