Decision per correspondance C 915/2024 Adoption of a new work item "Industrial valves - Additional requirements for metallic valves for hydrogen application"

Scope

This document specifies information on provisions for industrial metallic valves for hydrogen applications and specifies additional requirements applicable to material selection, design, manufacture and final assessment different from the available European standards for metallic industrial valves.

The provisions contained in this document are intended as a reference for purchasers and manufacturers of metallic industrial valves.

This document distinguishes between four services/damage mechanisms, which might exist in combinations:

• low temperature service;

• hydrogen environmental embrittlement (HEE) or hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC);

• high temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA);

• hydrogen service with cyclic loads (fatigue). This document will take into account the difference between gaseous hydrogen (GH2) and liquid hydrogen (LH2), where necessary.

The provisions described in this document can also be considered for safety valves and control valves, however their suitability has not been assessed in the context of this document.

Purpose

The aim of this new work item is to write a clear application standard in practical terms on what are the technical construction and/or performance requirements for industrial metal valves used in different industrial applications involving the use of hydrogen in order to achieve the targets identified in the European Sustainable Energy Transition goals.

Hydrogen is used in many industrial applications from low pressures (for example: 25 mbar in the distribution of blends with natural gas in urban distribution networks) up to very high pressures (for example: 1 000 bar and more in compression stations for hydrogen production and storage tanks).

The application standard is intended to link up with the existing directives and product standards of the different valve types and provide clear indications as to which requirements are necessary to ensure compliance with the requirements of safe design and consequent construction for industrial applications of metal valves with low medium and high operating temperatures.
