PNW 34-1152 ED1: Measurement of ozone production from UV-C radiation sources and luminaires

Scope

This document specifies methods to measure the ozone production in three quantities: ozone concentration, ozone output, and ozone production efficacy. Two methods, static method and dynamic method, are specified in the document.

This document applies to UV-C radiation sources and luminaires incorporating UV-C radiation sources.

Purpose

For UV-C radiation sources, there can be ozone generated as secondary substance of the UV radiation.

In some applications, e.g., water disinfection, ozone generated from an UV -C radiation source is useful for germicidal purposes. With more ozone production preferred, this type of ozone is considered intentional ozone production, which features more ozone production.

On the other hand, for the open-air use in occupied spaces, ozone generated from UV-C radiation sources and potential leakage from luminaires incorporating UV-C radiation sources is not preferred, and should be limited. This type of ozone generation is considered unintentional ozone production, which features trace ozone production.

For intentional ozone generation, the generation should be measured to assess whether the generated ozone quantity is not less than that declared by the manufacturer or responsible vendor, or as required by corresponding specifications. For unintentional ozone production, the ozone generated from the UV-C radiation sources or leaking from the luminaire should be measured for safety reasons, as it can have adverse health effects for humans in high concentrations (> 50 ppb) especially for the respiratory trac t and lungs.

This document specifies two types of measurement methods, a static method and a dynamic method
