Activation of PWI AI trustworthiness framework

Scope

This document provides a framework for AI systems trustworthiness which contains terminology, concepts, high-level horizontal requirements, guidance and a method to contextualize those to specific stakeholders, domains or applications. The high-level horizontal requirements address foundational aspects and characteristics of trustworthiness of AI systems.

This document is primarily intended for organization placing on the market or putting into service AI systems.

Purpose

This project supports the AI standardization request, by providing guidance and requirements for stakeholders on how to use, among others, the standards identified in the Architecture of Standards under development in WG 1, to comply with the Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence.

The project aims at developing a standard on AI trustworthiness framework ensuring actionability for all stakeholders and sectors. Its goal is to bring consistency, comprehensiveness and alignment to high level horizontal requirements that contribute to building AI trustworthiness.

In consultation across JTC 21, this project identifies high-level horizontal requirements covering foundational aspects and characteristics of the trustworthiness of AI systems. Where relevant and possible, informative and normative standards, specifications and reports, whether from ISO/IEC, CEN-CENELEC, ETSI, IEEE… such as mentioned in the Architecture of Standards will be referenced.

The project will provide a methodology to contextualize high-level horizontal requirements by referencing other standardization documents. This methodology can leverage the profile concept.

The project intends to align with the requirements specific to the draft AI Act reflecting European areas of interest and values, including the protection of fundamental rights. This project also aligns with the AI architecture of standards as discussed and accepted by JTC21. The project will ensure that all trustworthy requirements scoped in this standard are well aligned with the already listed high-risk requirements of the draft AI Act as well as the technical specifications as defined in the standardization request.

The outline for the standard is transmitted with this document.
