ISO/PWI 19998 Structural bolting coordination — Tasks and responsibilities

Scope

This document specifies the essential bolting quality-related tasks and responsibilities included in structural bolting coordination.

Purpose

Use of this standard will enhance structural integrity in construction of steel structures that used bolted connections, ensuring public safety and continued service of the infrastructure constructed using bolted connections.

Bolted connections are used in virtually every steel structure, including buildings, bridges, transmission towers, and other forms of infrastructure. The use of proper materials and proper installation of those materials is essential for structural integrity, ensuring public safety and continued service of the infrastructure being built using bolted connections. Although standards address the design and details of bolted connections, there are no current provisions to ensure that companies responsible for such construction have adequate specialized management to coordinate the many facets of their bolting operations, such as product procurement and storage, bolting equipment, development of bolting procedures, installation personnel training and qualification, inspection to be performed before, during and after installation, quality records, and other items essential for the work. This document parallels ISO 14731 for welding coordination, the other significant connection method used in steel structures.
