ISO/NP 24832-1 Natural gas--Upstream area-- Determination of pore structure and mineral content for shale gas reservoir -- Part 1: Part 1: Scanning Electron Microscope method

Scope

Standardization of the general requirements and calculation methods for the preparation of shale samples based on scanning electron microscopy, scanning image requirements, image processing and analysis techniques. This standard is suitable for digital core scanning and analysis of shale using scanning electron microscopy.

Purpose

At present, shale gas has been discovered and exploited in many countries and regions. It is estimated that the global total reserves of shale gas will reach 214.5 trillion cubic meters. Therefore, it can be expected that shale gas will occupy a large proportion of energy resources in the future. The occurrence state and content of shale gas are closely related to its reservoir type and micro nano pore characteristics. The size, shape, content, connectivity and matrix composition of pores control the occurrence state and content of shale gas. Micrometre-scale mineral particles and nanometre-scale pores developed in shale are difficult to be observed by conventional experimental methods. Using Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy, a 2D or 3D digital core model can be established and the digital features of shale core composition and pore structure can be extracted and analysed. However, lack of universal operation and procession standard leads to experimental results not comparable between different institutions. Standardization of this method is advantageous the promotion the geological evaluation and comparative study.
