Decision CEN/TC 168 12/202 Components for slings – Safety – Part 1: Forged steel components grade 10

Scope

This standard specifies general requirements for forged steel components of grade 10 mainly for use in:

Chain slings of grades 10G and 10X

Steel wire rope slings

Textile slings Intended for lifting purposes

The standard does not apply to hand forged components and welded links, nor to other welded components

Purpose

Requirements for safety, manufacturing, use and maintenance of grade 8 and grade 4 chain sling components have been covered by European harmonized standards for decades. Grade 10 components are still not covered by European standards despite such products being manufactured and placed on the EU market and used within industry.

Work has begun on a preliminary work item for grade 10 chain, notably;

WI 00168146 Round steel short link chain for general lifting purposes – medium tolerance sling chain – grade 10G from quenched and tempered alloy steel, and;

WI 00168147 Round steel short link chain for extended lifting purposes – medium tolerance sling chain – grade 10X, from quenched and tempered alloy steel.

The purpose of this PWI is to develop a series of standards with grades that complement the above chain standards.
