JTC1-SC43/72/NP Information Technology - Brain-computer Interfaces - Reference Architecture

Scope

This document specifies a general brain-computer interface (BCI) reference architecture.

Purpose

This document presents a comprehensive reference architecture (RA) for BCI. The BCI RA identifies and highlights architectural concerns commonly found in BCI systems across industrial sectors and classifies them into viewpoints along with their respective stakeholders. It describes, analyzes and, where appropriate, provides guidance to resolve these concerns in these viewpoints, resulting in a certain abstract architecture representation. It specifies a reference architecture for BCI using the approach and terminology defined in ISO/IEC/IEEE 42010 and ISO/IEC JTC 1/AG 8 N647. The intended purpose of this document includes:

– providing a common language for the various stakeholders.

– providing guidance to system architects in building the BCI systems.

– providing consistency of design and implementation of technology to solve similar problem sets.

– enhancing system consistency, interoperability, reusability and scalability across various BCI systems.

– providing technical reference for agencies and the public to understand BCI solutions.
