Standards Development

Scope

This project specifies safety requirements for horticultural lighting purpose luminaires, incorporating
electric light sources for operation from supply voltages up to 1 000 V.

NOTE The luminaires for horticultural lighting purpose are named as horti-luminaires in this project.

Purpose

Horticultural lighting, as one type of specific ap plication, is becoming more and more popular,
especially with the application of LED technologies, and the needs for facility farming, such as
vertical farming and greenhouse.

Compared with safety requirements for general lighting purpose luminaires, the differences for horti-
luminaires are mainly derived based on following considerations:

• changing of environmental conditions for the application. Horti- luminaires are normally
indoor used, but with horticulture cultivation purpose, the environmental conditions are normally
severe;

• changing of application purpose from vision sensation to horticulture use. Photobiological
safety requirements and UV resistance requirements need to be developed based on this nature.

This project acknowledges the need for safety specifications for horti-luminaires, which are to be
considered as additional requirements or deviated requirements comparing with the similar type of
luminaires used for general lighting purpose. The provisions in this project intend to represent the
technical knowledge of experts from the field of the horticultural lighting, and are intended to be
developed in close context with IEC 60598-1 (the safety standard for luminaires in general) and
corresponding Part 2 of IEC 60598 (the particular safety standard of corresponding type of
luminaires for general lighting purpose).

Development of this project will not only serve the above need, which can also serve as the technical
support from lighting industry to the achievement of SDG 3, Good health and well-being, since the
horticultural lighting based facility farming will help to improve the quality of the horticulture.
