PNW 46C-1268 ED1: Twinax cables for digital communications - Part 1-2: Time-domain impedance test method for twinax cables for digital communications

Scope

This part of IEC 62783-1 specifies the definitions of different types of impedance as well as the test methods in time domain. It’s applicable for twinax cables, twinax cable assemblies and other type s of balanced cables.

Purpose

The purpose of this proposal is to create a new test method for impedance measurements in time domain.

Due to short-reach application, very high frequency and quick transmission rate of twinax cables, its test methods are significantly different from the traditional symmetrical communication cables test me thods specified in IEC 61156-1 series. Not only frequency domain method but also time domain method are needed for this kind of cable. Time domain impedance is one of the most important parameters in time domain, Time domain impedance measurement provides an easy way to evaluate and verify the quality of twinax cables and assemblies.

The twinax cables are used widely in the data centres servers, cloud storage and cloud calculation, big data, etc. in the current world. There is no such test method specification in IEC to guide the manufacuters, users and 3-party organizations. This new standard is intended to provide a method and basis for quality assurance of twinax cables for them.
